UK VoIP traffic is set to rise as BT prepares to announce plans to expand its super-fast broadband network, reports the Financial Times.

Ian Livingston, chief executive, is expected to present an updated broadband agenda this week, which would increase the broadband network range.

This would significantly increase VoIP traffic, as more users can benefit from more reliable and higher-quality internet connections.

BT currently plans to construct a £1.5 billion fibre network, which would enable 40 per cent of British homes to access its next-generation broadband package by 2012.

The expanded network would be available to 66 per cent of UK consumers, which would result in a significant increase in costs for a company which posted heavy losses in recent years.

The fixed-line provider believes the investment will be a success however, as the move could entice telecoms giants Sky and TalkTalk to pay to use the infrastructure.

The telecoms-provider will publicise the project at the firm's full-year results on Thursday (May 13th).
