VoIP traffic could be set to rise as businesses begin to access the technology on the iPad, according to experts.

Users are able to turn the iPad into a VoIP phone by connecting to the internet via the built-in Wi-Fi or 3G cards and using a Bluetooth headset to make calls.

Cisco Cheng, writing for pcmag.com, highlighted the potential impact the device could have on business IP telephony solutions.

He wrote on the website: "[Applications on the iPad] will let you create a separate line and voicemail for your business. It even supports up to 20-person conferencing, if you're unable to gather everyone in one room."

This would enable remote employees to partake in business meetings when absent from the office, while users will also benefit from more reliable call connections.

The iPad is due to be released in the UK on May 28th, following Apple's decision to postpone the release by a month due to overwhelming demand for the product in the US.
