New technology launched in the US will enable users to transform their current Wi-Fi phone into mobileVoIP hardware.

The AT&T 3G MicroCell is a wireless station that transmits a 3G phone signal, rather than a Wi-Fi connection.

Once this hardware is connected to a consumer's router, incoming wireless calls are transferred via the internet, so users essentially now have a VoIP hardware application.

This development will mean that users with poor network coverage will have access to high-quality IP telephony solutions, while VoIP traffic will also markedly increase.
Reviewing the product, technology expert Jim Rossman wrote on the Dallas Morning News website: "I have to say, it's one of the best products I've ever reviewed."

Small businesses will benefit from using the MicroCell, which supports ten mobile phones overall, and four at any one time.

The device also has built-in security features, including a location-restricted coverage area.

A GPS chip keeps track of the MicroCell's location at all times and it will deactivate itself if it is outside of its registered area.
