IP telephony solutions in Ireland are set to improve following the introduction of super-fast broadband, according to the Irish Times.

Cable operator UPC and mobile operator 3 have both announced plans to upgrade infrastructure which would increase broadband speeds.

UPC will launch its 100Mbps broadband package from August, resulting in more reliable and higher quality VoIP solutions.

The bundle will initially be available to 500,000 consumers, while businesses across the country will also be able to benefit from the super fast-broadband package.

Mobile VoIP hardware users can expect a similar improvement in their service with 3's new faster broadband deal.

David Hennessy, chief technical officer at 3, highlighted the rapid development in mobile broadband speeds, noting that transmission rates of 42Mbps could be achieved by the end of the year.

He told the newspaper: "Since 2007, speeds have doubled year-on-year, and that could even be surpassed in 2010."

Meanwhile, mobile VoIP customers may be able to access download speeds comparable with land-based technology, as manufacturers believe 100Mbps is not unattainable.
