3G handsets could help mobile VoIP solutions soar

Adoption of mobileIP telephony solutions could accelerate as sales of third-generation mobile phones outstrip those of second-generation mobile phones.

3G handset shipments eclipsed 2G handset shipments in the first quarter of 2010, ABI Research has said.

Overall, handset shipments globally for the first quarter of 2010 reached 303 million, up 19 per cent on the first quarter of 2009, according to the technology market research firm.

The growth of 3G handsets will increase potential access to mobile VoIP solutions, with 3G technology allowing simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher data rates.

The strongest handset shipment growth was seen in the Middle East and Africa, followed by the Americas, particularly in the USA. Europe, however, saw only single-digit growth.

Using IP telephony solutions via third-generation wireless technology can be as cost-effective as any other means of communication if you are already a 3G user.

3G subscribers who already use their plan for surfing the web or gaming would find it economical to adopt a VoIP provider application, Nadeem's Voice Over IP Blog has said.
