Adoption of IP telephony solutions could benefit from the continuing and vigorous increase in broadband take up.

Fixed broadband is still growing robustly, with fixed broadband subscribers totalling over 430 million in 2009, ABI Research has said.

This represents a 13 per cent increase over 2008, according to the most recent broadband subscriber data from the technology market research firm.

The continuing growth in broadband subscribers will increase potential access to VoIP phones, which use internet infrastructure to make and receive telephone calls.

Jake Saunders, VP for forecasting at ABI Research, said that fixed broadband is an "attractive platform" for the delivery of online services such as IPTV and games.

Fixed broadband will continue to complement mobile broadband services due to demand for greater interactivity in the home as well as in the workplace from end users.

The VoIP carrier community could be set to flourish as the world economy begins to recover from the global financial crisis.

International network operators weathered the recession surprisingly well, communications markets research company TeleGeography said recently.

International bandwidth usage increased by 60 per cent in 2009, in line with the past two years, and well ahead of the trend of 2002 to 2006.
