Businesses could turn to VoIP solutions as they look to invest in technology that can prove its worth in 2010.

While IT spending is expected to pick up this year, companies will focus on technology with proven value as they recover from the recession, silicon.com has said.

Steve Ranger, editor of the technology and business news and analysis website, said that "2010 is still going to be a testing year for IT.

"Tech projects will need to have a fast and proven return on investment if they are going to be signed off", he explained.

This could mean increased business investment in IP telephony solutions, which can cut businesses telecommunication costs by using existing internet infrastructure to transmit voice calls.

Businesses are beginning to cautiously invest in new technology as they realise it must be implemented now so they are prepared for economic growth when it comes, Mr Ranger added.

VoIP phones are "moving into the small business mainstream", the FOX Business Network said recently.

VoIP provider services, along with other emerging web-based applications like video conferencing, can reduce the need for business travel, according to the business news website.
