High-definition mobileIP telephony solutions could become a commonplace means of communication within the next four years.

Around 487 million mobile subscribers will use HD-enabled handsets to conduct clear, comprehensible conversations over upgraded networks in 2015, ABI Research has said.

While the HD telephone market is virtually non-existent today, the technology market research firm expects growth to rise quickly in 2013 and start to rocket by 2014.

It is likely that demand for HD voice calls will quickly filter through to the VoIP provider market, which is in turn likely to see the clarity of voice calls conducted over VoIP phones improve.

"The upgrade to HD voice is not especially expensive", Fritz Jordan, principal analyst at ABI Research, said, as newer 3G networks can already use the HD format.

Over 900 million VoIP users already enjoy the clear audio quality of wideband voice via VoIP solutions, according to ABI Research, and will soon expect the same from mobile services.

High-definition VoIP phones could be more attractive to consumers than businesses, voip-news.co.uk said in January.

This will especially be the case if VoIP HD offerings are connected to multimedia services, according to the independent online VoIP market information publication.
