IP telephony solutions and video conferencing could help business people, and others who need to communicate, who have been grounded by the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland.

With the volcanic ash cloud pinning down thousands of aeroplanes, millions of people have been stranded. VoIP solutions could help them a lot, Nadeem's Voice Over IP Blog has said.

Grounded business people who could not attend meetings physically could take part virtually by using VoIP phones and video over internet protocol, according to the VoIP blog.

"Some can even do so for free, if they have the necessary facilities," Nadeem Unuth, author of Nadeem's Voice Over IP Blog, said.

Mr Unuth added that he expected many people to consider adopting IP telephony solutions once the cloud has cleared, in order to assist them should something similar happen in future.

Companies can limit and reduce the problems caused by travel disruption via the implementation of new working technologies, Virgin Media Business said recently.

Alistair McKinnon, senior product manager for IP Multimedia at Virgin Media Business, said: "It amazes me that more organisations don't embrace some of the newer technologies that are available to minimise disruption on their organisation."
