Technology, such as IP telephony solutions, can save users money, as well as help make them more productive, the Coffee Desk has said.

VoIP phones can cut communication costs by using existing broadband networks to make and receive telephone calls, according to the technology news and reviews website.

VoIP solutions have "dramatically lowered the cost of residential and institutional phone service", Jovan Washington of the Coffee Desk said.

Mr Washington added that there are now a range of "traditional VoIP carriers" available, many of them adding "dozens of new features inexpensively".

He explained that mobile phone users may soon be able to save money by routing calls through a VoIP carrier, but the network technology involved is still too expensive for it to be cost effective.

Making telephone calls via a VoIP provider works out cheaper than using a traditional telephone line in the end, Origin IT said recently.

This is because they use a single network - usually the internet - to transmit voice and data, the IT support company told business community website BtoB.

David Burns, business development manager at Origin IT, said that VoIP phones have been "adopted with some gusto globally" because they offer "significantly cheaper communication".
