Free open source communications service Asterix is to incorporate a long-term support service into the 1.8 version of Asterix PBX, EnterpriseVoIPplanet has said.

Moving to a long-term support (LTS) model, where Asterix solutions would be updated periodically, is a new approach for the Asterisk service, according to the VoIP news and reviews website.

The Asterisk 1.8 LTS is a solution to the 1.6 release, which introduced releases with new features faster than previously. However, some users complained that there were too many releases.

Kevin Fleming, director of software technologies at Asterix company Digium, said: "Someone that is more focused on running an Asterisk server that they won't have to mess with for four years except for bug fix updates can now do that".

The Asterisk 1.8 LTS release is likely to be available in the third quarter of 2010 and will include a number of new features, such as a reverse call display function and more ISDN support.

AsteriskExchange, an official online applications store for Asterix solutions, was launched by Digium earlier this year.

The marketplace aims to enable the VoIP carrier community and others to market their Asterisk products to the 65,000 strong Asterisk user group.
