The use of mobileVoIP solutions could soar over the next five years due to the rapid and continued growth of mobile internet.

Mobile internet will be bigger than the desktop internet in five years, global financial services firm Morgan Stanley was reported as saying by startups guide ReadWriteStart.

Mary Meeker, leader of Morgan Stanley's technology research team, presenting a report at Events@Google, said that use of mobile internet is "ramping" faster than desktop internet did.

The speedy and sustained increase in mobile internet use could potentially be reflected in the take up of mobile VoIP solutions, which use the mobile internet to transmit voice calls.

Ms Meeker added that 3G has reached a tipping point, as it is now available to at least 20 per cent of the world's mobile phone users.

Morgan Stanley's Internet Trends report predicts that VoIP traffic via the mobile internet will grow 103 per cent year-over-year up to 2014, a growth rate second only to video traffic.

VoIP traffic is likely to have been boosted by the boom in mobile data use over the last 12 months.

Smartphone traffic skyrocketed between February 2009 and February 2010, increasing by 193 per cent, AdMob said recently.
