The new operating system for the Apple iPhone could make it more practical to use mobileIP telephony solutions as the primary means of making telephone calls.

iPhone OS 4 will bring multitasking to the iPhone 3GS, the iPad and the third-generation iPod Touch, allowing applications to operate simultaneously, Gizmodo has said.

This means that VoIP solutions will be able to run constantly in the background to receive calls while the devices are used for other tasks, according to the gadget guide.

With previous versions of iPhone OS, VoIP applications had to be open to receive calls, making them "useless as a phone replacement", Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo said.

Devices powered by iPhone OS 4 will switch straight to users' VoIP applications when they receive incoming VoIP traffic.

Users will be able to talk for as long as they want to before returning to the same stage of the application they were using before they received the call.

It is likely that Apple's iPad tablet computer will always rely on IP telephony solutions over traditional mobile network operators to deliver voice services, iTWire said recently.
