In a poll on My-Laptop, 46 per cent of respondents said that a mass roll-out of broadband was needed to rural areas to modernise the UK's e-infrastructure.

The move would require a broadband tax of 50p per month on each current broadband line. With almost half voting for this move, support appears to be strong.

However, of the remaining surveyed individuals, only 31 per cent out and out believed it wasn't needed, leaving 23 per cent who said that the government should use a portion of the TV license.

This shows that in the UK some individuals see broadband as a service on a par with television and, combined with the ones who agreed to a mass roll-out, 69 per cent of respondents were keen on the tax.

High penetration broadband would support the UK's future broadband, which could in turn spur the use of VoIP.
