It is likely that Apple's iPad tablet computer will always rely on IP telephony solutions over traditional mobile network operators to deliver voice services, iTWire has said.

According to the IT and telecommunication news website, iPhone OS "hacking" group iPhone Dev Team was recently passed "insider information" regarding the next version of the iPad.

The next iPad will be smaller and incorporate a minimum 13Kbps speech codec, allowing this new device to use VoIP solutions to make voice calls, the iPhone Dev Team reported.

In an article entitled the next iteration of the iPad - the death of telephony?, iTWire's David Heath wrote: "the iPad may never be a genuine phone, instead relying on VoIP services to carry telephony".

This new device will use Wi-Fi and 3G to transmit voice services rather than the traditional wireless telephony that Apple's iPhone uses, Mr Heath explained.

The new tablet computer from electronics company Samsung will be able to make voice calls using IP telephony solutions, Boy Genius Report has said.

According to the gadget blog, VoIP solutions will be used to enable the device to make calls over 3G and 4G networks.
