Juniper Research has published new research, showing that the value of mobile web 2.0 applications and services will increase to over $6 billion (£3.9 billion) by 2012.

Web 2.0 applications can include ones designed specifically for VoIP, allowing users to install dynamic applications on their phones to ease their VoIP experience.

And with services such as geolocation expected to grow in line with this trend, super-advanced VoIP applications are forecast to rise, with extra levels of information added to existing VoIP services.

However, the report found that monetising mobile web 2.0 services remains a challenge, though opportunities exist for service providers across a range of business models to step in.

Report author Ian Chard observed that "since the use of IP delivers lower cost calling rates, for international calls in particular, then as 3G service adoption gradually becomes more prevalent there is likely to be a marked migration of voice traffic across to mobile VoIP [traffic]".
