Adoption of advanced IP telephony solutions in the UK could rise in 2010 as access to faster broadband increases.

BT has announced that its next-generation broadband network should be available to more than 16 million UK homes and businesses by the end of the year.

Independent UK internet service provider reviews website ISPreview UK reported that the telecommunications operator's 'up to' 24Mbps product is now reaching one million end users.

Uptake of VoIP phones could mirror the increased availability of super-fast internet as it provides the data transfer rate needed to use VoIP solutions.

Sian Baldwin, director of broadband and content services at BT Wholesale, said that next-generation broadband would help meet "growing demand for high-speed access to a range of online services - including…multiple VoIP services".

Widespread adoption of IP telephony solutions in the UK could be made possible due to new government internet infrastructure plans.

Gordon Brown recently announced plans for Labour to provide every UK household with access to super-fast broadband.

In a speech, the prime minister described super-fast broadband access as "the electricity of the digital age" and said that it "must be for all - not just for some".
