According to the Conservative party, the use of VoIP could be stymied by Labour's plan for a broadband tax.

The Telegraph report that the Conservatives believe as many as 40,000 potential broadband subscribers would be unable to stay connected if the tax was introduced.

Jeremy Hunt, the shadow culture secretary, explained: "The phone tax is misguided, dangerous and unnecessary, which is why we have pledged to scrap it. The government's own figures suggest that this tax will make the internet unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of people and will especially penalise low-income families. This makes a complete mockery of Gordon Brown's boasts today about promoting universal access."

The Conservatives want to instead work with a heavy private sector influence in increasing competition among broadband providers, thereby driving prices down and pushing potential VoIP traffic up.
