UK VoIP traffic is to receive a boost, thanks to plans announced by Virgin Media to trial the delivery of next-generation 50Mbps (Megabits per second) broadband over telegraph poles, it has been widely reported.

This method of aerial deployment, where broadband is delivered via cable strung from telegraph poles, will increase the amount of broadband which UK homes can receive.

Over one million UK homes could be affected by the deployment, Virgin announced.

And it is expected that, if the trial is a success, more deployments like this could be on the way. One of the costliest aspects of broadband delivery is in digging up the local street infrastructure to provide the cables to the home - with this, there is no need for that.

Looking forward, if Virgin's scheme is a success, the amount of potential VoIP traffic running across UK networks could increase.
