In an exclusive interview with V3.co.uk Simon McCalla, the new IT chief for Nominet - the UK's domain registry service - has spoken out about the services plans for VoIP providers.

Specifically, Mr McCalla wants to lobby VoIP providers to bundle the Enum number mapping protocol with their services.

"Enum has a lot of advantages to businesses, but take-up is not as strong as people had predicted. We need a critical mass of people to take advantage of it. We'll relocate the pricing model though. We want to encourage VoIP providers to bundle Enum with their services, and we've had pretty positive discussions so far. We also see the mobile apps market as another area which could use Enum very well," he said.

Enum (E.164) numbers are globally unique, language independent identifiers for resources on public telecommunications networks.

The integration of VoIP services with Enum numbers will increase the efficiency of VoIP traffic and take unnecessary pressure of UK networks which carry VoIP traffic.
