The VoIP carrier market coped well in 2009 compared to other IT and telecom markets, despite seeing a decline, Synergy Research Group has said.

The global VoIP solutions network operator market fell by 18 per cent year-on-year in 2009, but still totalled over £6.5 billion, according to the market research company.

IP telephony solutions over the last 24 months have been driven by mobile network operators, who are looking to take advantage of the cost benefits that the technology can offer.

Traditionally, the biggest drivers for carrier VoIP has been migration from legacy TDM networks and PSTNs (Public Switched Telephone Network) to VoIP platforms.

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a framework for delivering IP multimedia services, will have a "strong impact" on the carrier VoIP market over the next few years, Synergy Research Group predicted.

Jeremy Duke, principal analyst and founder at Synergy Research Group, said that IMS had "clearly showed its potential in 2009" due its innovative qualities and because it had become increasingly practical.

IP telephony solutions of all kinds are now being taken up by both businesses and households, market intelligence company In-Stat said recently.
