A scheme to provide the infrastructure for VoIP traffic in the north and west of Scotland has been completed, the BBC has reported.

The Pathfinder North scheme links 801 schools, libraries and other public buildings in the isolated Scottish regions of the Highlands, Moray, Argyll and Northern Isles to broadband.

This development means that the regions now have a level of broadband sufficient to play host to large-scale VoIP traffic.

Carolyn Wilson, chairwoman of the resources committee, said: "The Pathfinder North scheme represents a major investment in rural locations, which depend so heavily on good communications."

Now, 95 per cent of the homes in the area have access to broadband, allowing for huge levels of VoIP traffic. The project is going to be evaluated between March and June.
