For VoIP traffic to rise, comfortable further investment is needed to allow the UK's plan for 90 per cent fibre penetration to take shape, it has been claimed.

The plan to provide fast broadband via fibre networks to a high percentage of UK homes is going to require a significant level of investment to be successful, according to various media outlets.

Investment will be needed to make the network successful, according to the media outlets, because even with BT opening up its tunnels to allow for greater fibre provisioning the state of the UK's finances means that private sector investment, or a secondary tax layer, will be necessary to allow for true VoIP take off.

The next-generation fibre networks will be built, but it seems that it is going to take longer than has been previously imagined. This will spur innovation in the VoIP sector and, with work still to be done in areas such as voice optimisation and data transmissions, could ultimately lead to an increase in VoIP's efficiency, so that when the networks appear the increase in VoIP traffic will not be so severe.
