The possibility of tailor-made VoIP phones took a step closer today with the announcement of the launch of the Symbian^3 (S^3) platform, a new, entirely open source operating system by the Symbian Foundation.

Symbian is one of the world's most popular mobile operating systems and with the launch of Symbian^3 the foundation is making it significantly easier for companies to edit the operating system for maximum VoIP compatibility.

By open sourcing the entire operating system it is comparatively easy for companies to alter the core programming of the software so that VoIP connectivity is easily achievable and is optimised for the specific hardware it runs on.

The third iteration of the operating system also comes with a network architecture that is ready for the advent of 4G and is also gifted with advanced 2D and 3D graphics processing. Combined, these will make it relatively easy for Symbian^3 phones to offer high-definition VoIP calls with webcam integration if the phone hardware can support it.
