VoIP phones are capable of great security already, but a new report highlights that for certain individuals, they may represent the difference between life and death.

An article in IEEE Spectrum and reported by Wired Magazine's Danger Room blog has highlighted some of the methods used by individuals to encode secret messages and files into VoIP transmissions.

According to the article, it is possible for people to encode large amounts of almost invisible data into VoIP transmissions, allowing them to exchange secure information without prying eyes having the ability to see, study or interfere.

The technique has numerous applications. It can allow businesses to securely exchange large amounts of data while talking about a seemingly innocuous subject or it can be adapted as a way of transmitting information while carrying out a conversation.

As the security and resilience of any company's data architecture grows in importance, it seems likely that VoIP communication systems are going to be used further.

Now they can offer security, as well as affordability, to users of their IP telephony solutions.
