The prevalence of new technologies like VoIP phones has changed the traditional telecommunications industry, SecurityInfoWatch.com has said.

The likes of IP telephony solutions and smartphones have opened up the potential of the home phone market, according to the systems integration information website.

The adoption of the likes of VoIP solutions means that services are now increasingly "tied to the internet, mobile devices and smartphones," the article states.

The likes of VoIP, mobile internet, wireless communication, and live video streaming are playing a growing role in the sector, Deborah L O'Mara of SecurityInfoWatch.com said.

"The residential vertical market's time has come now, thanks to the proliferation of cellular, wireless, broadband and more," she explained.

VoIP carriers could begin to bundle their services with other solutions, which may increase their appeal to increasingly knowledgeable consumers.

"The payoff will outweigh the initial growing pains, as a younger generation takes hold as the primary buyer - an audience that is primarily cellphone only," Ms O'Mara explained.

The challenge of internet-based telephone services to the dominance of the landline phone network is not a scenario widely foreseen a few years ago, technology media organisation IDG said recently.
