Consumers are not using up the call time and texts offered by their mobile plans because of VoIP solutions and instant messaging (IM), GoMo News has said.

IP telephony and IM are removing the need for mobile subscribers to use their allocation of voice calls and SMS, according to the mobile marketing news website.

The accessibility offered by VoIP providers to these services means that consumers need not own a sophisticated phone to use them.

"You don't need a smartphone to do this," wrote Cian O'Sullivan, "there are numerous services that allow you to access these channels on an older device."

However, the article emphasises that the increasing complexity of mobile phones is contributing to the growing prominence of alternative voice and text services.

"Mobiles are capable of so much more, and traditional functions simply aren't as important anymore," Mr O'Sullivan explained.

According to the recent fourth annual Mobile Money Report from moneysupermarket.com, British mobile users waste nearly half of their call time and text allowance each month.

Such allowances are seen as less significant by consumers now that mobile internet access is widespread, according to the price comparison website.
