VoIP phones with advanced security software are going to increase fivefold over the next five years, a report by ABI Research has shown.

The report shows that smartphones - which are VoIP capable - are all going to see a major increase in security software.

"Although malware has been seen in mobile handsets, in the past it has not done much damage," says ABI Research vice president Stan Schatt. "But smartphones have access to more sensitive data every year, and security must be tightened to prevent the theft or loss of important business information."

By increasing the security around smartphones and VoIP manufacturers can attract more consumers.

The report predicts that large companies are going to buy security packages for their smartphones, allowing the phones to be locked, located or erased remotely, in case of loss or accident.

And future handsets are going to come pre-loaded with anti-virus software clients to prevent the loss of data and services to malware, the report suggests.

So as security grows users can use their VoIP hardware, confident in the knowledge that their assets are protected.
