Vodafone has made waves with the rebranding and relaunch of a femtocell VoIP hardware product.

The 'Sure Signal' device allows users to extend the 3G network coverage of their home or office and increases the range of IP telephony solutions available to the typical users. It can also interface with their broadband connection to allow for backchannel traffic.

Recent research has highlighted how important indoor phone coverage is to users, with one in five saying they have missed an important event or occasion because of a lack of signal.

Simon Saunders, chairman of the Femto Forum, said that femtocells have been "causing a major stir in the telecoms industry as they represent a major new opportunity for economically delivering increased mobile broadband coverage and data speeds."

He said their popularity comes from their "solid, reliable voice coverage to all existing 3G phones."

"They also provide a means for customers to access a great experience of mobile broadband data, while relieving operator networks of much of the pressure created by the growth in mobile data usage from 3G dongles and smartphones," he added.
