Using VoIP solutions is one of ten things every IT manager should do this year, Phillips Taylor Brown has said.

Adopting IP telephony solutions is one of ten ways that every IT manager can bring their networks up to speed in 2010, according to the IT consultancy.

Tony Brown, director at Phillips Taylor Brown, said that VoIP phones are "coming of age now," with progress coming to the technology "thick and fast".

The flexibility and features offered by VoIP is one reason why businesses should consider using it this year, Mr Brown said.

VoIP PBX is less proprietary than traditional PBX systems, giving companies more control of the way they use it.

Mr Brown said that VoIP is "almost certainly worth thinking about" by businesses that make many long distance calls due to the cost savings it can offer.

He identified remote access and mobile working as a third reason for enterprises to consider taking up VoIP in 2010.

He explained that employees can "appear as though they are at work" when they are working from home, on the move, or while away on business trips by using a VoIP handset or software phone setup to a company number.
