The carrier IP telephony market increased by almost ten per cent in the third quarter of 2009, Dell'Oro Group has said.

The VoIP carrier market grew to £481 million over the quarter, according to a recent report published by the networking and telecommunications industries information company.

This was largely due to providers investing in "infrastructure projects with strong near-term returns," such as VoIP solutions for businesses, the report explains.

"Business VoIP remains a hot area," said Greg Collins, vice president at Dell'Oro Group, commenting on the results of the company's Carrier IP Telephony Quarterly Report.

Mr Collins said the quarter saw businesses of all sizes "increasingly embrace" IP telephony solutions, unified communications, and IP business, or SIP, trunks.

Investment in these services and the equipment to support them "offers service providers attractive near-term returns and, thus, has been a boost to the market," Mr Collins explained.

Some session border controller (SBC, a VoIP network control device) providers saw double-digit revenue gains over the quarter, with the SBC market growing more than five per cent in the same period.

VoIP was the best performing industry of the last decade, according to figures published last month by industry research firm IBISWorld.
