A gadget that allows people to make VoIP calls from any mobile phone has been unveiled in the US.

The device from magicJack allows domestic users to make calls over the internet rather than over their mobile phone networks.

Using femtocell technology, the unit plugs into a USB port on an internet-enabled computer or laptop.

Users will be asked to pay a fixed annual charge of around $40 (£24) but will be able to make free calls over the internet.

iPhone users are already able to download an application that allows them to make VoIP calls. The only charge is for the mobile internet access.

The magicJack development, which was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week, presents another challenge to traditional landline technology.

MagicJack already sells a similar device that allows users to make internet calls user their home phone, largely bypassing their landline provider.

With the price of mobile calls falling and interoperability between mobile and the internet becoming increasingly simple for users, landlines are being squeezed like never before.
