A new femtocell could help to widen access to VoIP, its creator believes.

MagicJack has created a new miniature GSM base station that it claims will work with any GSM phone and will allow users to make VoIP calls.

The new jack will still connect with a computer, but it will allow users to make VoIP calls with their mobile handsets rather than through a wired phone.

According to PC World, numerous carriers are beginning to explore the use of femtocells within the home as part of a drive to help ease the strain on networks.

Creator of the jack Dan Borislow said that the phone should work with all handsets.

Wireless Business and Technology states that the company has spent some six years making the new jack that could help more people access VoIP connections from conventional handsets.

Speaking to the news provider, Mr Borislow also argued that the new technology could help to improve access to the emergency services.
