The potential impact that universal broadband could have on the UK has been published in map form by major internet service provider Orange.

Earlier this year the government pledged to deliver broadband services of at least two megabits per second to every home in the UK and the impact of widely available mobile broadband in particular could result in significant population shifts.

Substantial population increases are forecast for Scotland and the West Country as remote working from preferred parts of the UK becomes an option for many more people.

Robert Ainger, director of corporate marketing for Orange UK, said: "The interactive map means that visitors to the site can quickly check out their current location or somewhere else that takes their fancy to see how things are likely to pan out there in future."

Greater connectivity could also mean more people choose to save money on communications by using VoIP solutions.
