The BBC has announced it will be altering the way its headlines are written so that search engine optimisation (SEO) is maximised.

Changing the wording in this way means BBC articles are more likely to appear towards the top of internet searches on services such as Google and so the stories could be read by more people.

Sam Tilston, online marketing director of vitabits.co.uk, said the development could help the BBC maintain its position as a leader in the online world, although the corporation should ensure it does not take the practice too far.

Mr Tilston added: "They are not only optimising their headlines but also doing internal linking within the articles, which is a very effective SEO method."

While many organisations use SEO to widen their readership and could potentially boost business as a result, technology such as VoIP hardware can help reduce the cost of communicating with friends, family and colleagues.

Nearly half of businesses are increasing their paid search activities, according to research from Econsultancy and Guava.
