Adopting remote working practices could help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) grow, according to a specialist firm.

Remote access provider GoToMyPC said companies that offer remote working opportunities could offer their employees the chance to be more flexible as they could work from home, while this in turn could prompt greater loyalty to the company.

Figures from LogMeIn, a company that provides remote connectivity services for SMBs, and research from independent body Kelton suggest half of SMBs in the UK and US plan to expand their remote working operations over the course of the next six months.

Andrew Millard, director of e-commerce for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at GoToMyPC, said: "For some SMBs, the introduction of flexible working policies can be challenging, but those businesses that deploy flexible working and home working can thrive."

Business could use VoIP solutions to reduce the cost of communications for employees working outside the office.

A third of British workers are keen to reduce daily commuting times by working from home, according to figures produced by YouGov for Citrix Online.
