A new computer system designed to encourage technologically inexperienced over-50s to use IT and the internet has been launched by simplicITy.

Specifically designed for people who have never used a computer or the internet, the computer is based on a linux open-source operating system and offers a basic menu screen, giving users the opportunity to undertake basic tasks such as send or read emails, browse the internet or chat.

In addition, there is an option to watch tutorial videos on how to use the system, which are run by former Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton.

Nigel Houghton, managing director of simplicITy, said: "A very large proportion of [inexperienced web users] are in broadband-accessible areas and we are trying to address the market where these people are looking for something simple."

Having access to a more straightforward computer system could encourage older web users to take advantage of VoIP hardware as well.

More than 60 per cent of Britons who have chosen to remain offline have never used a computer before, according to figures from Ofcom.
