Web users will not replace their home broadband connection with a mobile device, but instead mobile will remain an additional technology for convenience, an expert has said.

According to Edd Dawson, editor of specialist website broadband.co.uk, most people will choose to use the internet in their own home, while mobile alternatives are likely to be more expensive to operate and prove less reliable.

Mobile technology offers a convenient alternative when people are on the move outside the home, but the expert said for exercises like homework the home computer will be the preferred option.

Mr Dawson said: "You are still going to need the internet when you write an essay, do schoolwork or when you are networking from home. You still need a full computer and a proper internet connection."

Having a fast home broadband connection can make VoIP solutions more efficient and provide access to quicker download times.

The government has pledged to deliver universal connectivity of two megabits per second to every UK home by 2012.
