Major internet service provider (ISP) BT Openreach has launched a new microsite designed to offer advice relating to the range of next-generation broadband services it is to offer.

Information is available on Broadband Enabling Technology, which is designed to allow users living as much as 12km from a telephone exchange access to connection speeds of one megabit per second (Mbps).

In addition, people interested in fibre-to-the-cabinet and fibre-to-the-home technologies, which deliver speeds of up to 40Mbps and 100Mbps respectively and are collectively known as Super-fast Fibre Access (SFFA), can also get relevant information from the website.

BT Openreach said: "Visitors to the site will find a wealth of information on how SFFA works and will be able to access a video and brochures explaining what it means for them."

Users can employ the technology to produce more efficient VoIP hardware and download web content faster.

Stephen Timms, the minister for Digital Britain, has said the government is committed to providing £200 million to ensure remote Scottish communities have access to next-generation broadband by 2017.
