Major internet service provider (ISP) BT Business is to carry out trials of high-speed fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband services in Glasgow Halfway and local businesses are set to benefit, reports BroadbandGenie.

The ISP's eligible business customers will have free access to download speeds as high as 40 megabits per second until the end of March next year and the trial follows similar undertakings by the company in Whitchurch, Cardiff and Muswell Hill, London.

In a recent study of 7,200 small and medium-sized enterprises, BT Business found nearly 30 per cent of organisations are already using high-speed broadband services and over 60 per cent have found it benefits their firm.

Making use of high-speed broadband services can help organisations retain a competitive edge in the national and global economies, while also potentially helping save money through the use of applications such as VoIP hardware.

BT has pledged to invest £1.5 billion in next-generation network development over the next few years, but faces stiff competition from companies like Virgin Media.

BT is also trialling fibre-to-the-premises technology, which connects fibre cabling directly to customers' properties.
