Nearly ten terabits of additional capacity has been added by Interoute to its European network, as IP traffic has been doubling every 12 months in recent years.

The extra capacity has been added with the use of Juniper Networks MX Series Ethernet service routers and will help the network provider's infrastructure cope with the increased use of multimedia content and the growing demands of internet service providers.

In addition, internet penetration is growing in countries such as Poland and Hungary, which has put further pressure on pan-European network technology.

Matthew Finnie, chief technical officer at Interoute, said: "Interoute, with this upgrade, has added over 9.5 terabits of capacity to Europe's internet, improving the quality, experience and availability of Europe's internet."

Juniper Networks MX Series Ethernet service routers have been deployed in nearly a dozen European cities, including London, Paris, Berlin and Prague, and could help make VoIP hardware more efficient.

Spain has announced it may include broadband services as part of its universal service obligation, according to a report from Ovum.
