An MSP has called for details to be considered on how the Scottish government plans to provide broadband services to every home in the country.

Iain Gray, the Holyrood Labour leader, said broadband should be considered as important as other domestic utilities such as water and electricity, while Scottish web users could also benefit from fast connections, reports the Herald Scotland.

He went on to say the government needs to consider the next stage in terms of nationwide Scottish broadband provision.

According to the paper, Mr Gray told ministers: "Fast broadband access is also one of the keys to a modern, prosperous future for Scotland. If we do not move our broadband vision on to the next level now, Scotland risks being left behind."

Fast broadband access can help increase download speeds for web users, while applications such as VoIP solutions can help reduce communications costs.

The government in Westminster has pledged to provide every UK home with a connection speed of two megabits per second by 2012.
