A Scandinavian internet service provider (ISP) has said it can use the 450 megahertz (MHz) radio spectrum to provide wireless broadband throughout the UK.

Ice.net dominates the broadband markets throughout Denmark, Sweden and Norway and offers connection speeds of around three megabits per second, reports the Telegraph.

The company is proposing using part of the 450MHz radio spectrum - reserved for courier companies, taxi firms and the emergency services - to deliver Wi-Fi to more people as this part of the spectrum can travel further.

Per Borgklint, chief executive of Ice.net, told the paper: "We can provide mobilebroadband where no one else can on a cost-effective basis. Companies that are unable to get in touch with the wider world will be able to compete better."

Broadband industry regulator Ofcom said it will consider the proposal in more detail to assess its feasibility.

Satellite technology is also being considered as a way of delivering faster broadband speeds to remote regions of the UK, which could help make VoIP solutions more efficient.
