The majority of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK feel they have benefitted from high-speed broadband services, says a leading internet service provider (ISP).

According to BT, 61 per cent of 7,200 SMEs surveyed said they are reaping the benefits of faster services, while 30 per cent said the use of new technology has helped them reduce their outgoings.

Just under 30 per cent said they have expanded their customer base by using technology, while features such as remote working capabilities - encompassing VoIP solutions - are also helping deliver a competitive edge.

Mick Hegarty, strategy director for BT Business, said: "We can also see that now more than ever technology has a critical role to play in the future success of these businesses, helping them to find new customers, market themselves more effectively and reduce costs."

BT is spending £1.5 billion on next-generation broadband networks and recently announced a diversion of funds to deliver fibre-to-the-premises technology to more customers.
