The vast majority of web users believe their broadband connection is secure, although a third have battled infections in the past, according to ISPreview.co.uk.

More than 530 people took part in the website's survey and nearly 90 per cent described their broadband connection as "reasonably secure", with nearly 80 per cent having set up both anti-virus protection and a firewall, potentially making VoIP hardware and other software safer to use.

In addition, over 85 per cent of participants consider themselves responsible for their own safety and security when using the internet, while just under 12 per cent believe their internet service provider should help with this.

Slightly more than five per cent of respondents were unsure whether or not their system had any form of virus protection.

In related news, the Centre for Secure Information Technologies has been established at Queen's University in Belfast at a cost of £30 million, with the aim of improving cyber security for businesses and homes throughout the UK.
