The majority of consumers value the reliability of their broadband connection ahead of getting the best financial deal, according to a new survey.

Comparison website BroadbandChoices.co.uk found 34 per cent of respondents considered a reliable service to be the most important element offered by their provider, while 23 per cent prioritised value for money.

Reliable services can mean VoIP solutions can be used more effectively and downloads can proceed uninterrupted.

Customer service also remains an issue for many people, with over half (55 per cent) of users who have lodged a complaint in the past feeling their issue was left unresolved.

Michael Phillips, product director of broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: "Nine years after broadband was first introduced in the UK, it is troubling to find that nearly half of broadband customers claim that the service isn't living up to their expectations."

He added he was surprised that consumers seem to value reliability higher than fast connection speeds.

Several major internet service providers were criticised earlier this year for advertising connection speeds that were unlikely to be attained.
