A new self-service web portal being made available to users in Bournemouth could provide access to connection speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

The speeds will be attainable using infrastructure laid by I3 Group company Fibrecity, which utilises fibre optic technology, a material considerably faster than conventional copper wiring.

Web users will be able to select a provider from a range of different companies through the portal and could use the faster services to use VoIP solutions more effectively and download online media in a speedier manner.

Elfed Thomas, chief executive of the I3 Group, said: "Our vision is to offer people living in Fibrecities real choice without being restricted to one provider."

The new infrastructure is expected to be finished in Bournemouth within the next 18 months.

The 100Mbps potential download speed represents a huge leap from the 2Mbps universal connectivity target currently being pursued by the government, although internet service providers such as Virgin Media and BT are also investing in fibre networks.
