VoIP solutions 'firmly established' with businesses

The strong infrastructure work carried out by VoIP providers during the 1990s means the technology is now firmly established as a quality communications platform, it has been claimed.

Writing for ZDNet, editor James Bannan said the face of corporate IP telephony has undergone a major transformation in recent years.

The growing range of services and integration offered by VoIP providers means this form of technology is increasingly being preferred to traditional fixed-line phone networks.

Indeed, Mr Bannan noted that many businesses looking to adopt a new VoIP solution or build on their existing investments are currently "spoiled for choice".

Meanwhile, the benefits are no longer available only to larger companies.

"Small- and medium-sized companies also stand to gain significantly from a data-centric telephony system - and most providers have a solution that can meet the needs of five users or 50,000," Mr Bannan added.

According to a recent survey by network provider Dimension Data, the take-up of VoIP solutions has remained strong, despite the recession.

The research revealed that some 60 per cent of contact centres in the UK now make use of the technology.
