BT Openreach is to pilot a new fixed-line broadband solution to help boost high-speed access for residents and businesses in rural areas.

Initial trials of the company's Broadband Enabling Technology (BET) in Inverness and Dingwall, Scotland have proved successful, delivering 1Mb/s services over distances of up to 12km.

The system will now be rolled out in eight more locations across the UK - and is being touted as a possible solution to the lack of broadband services in many rural areas.

John Small, managing director of service delivery at Openreach, said the firm was "really excited" about the potential of the new technology in current broadband "not-spots".

"By rolling out BET, we can help customers and assist the Government to realise its aim for a universal 2Mb/s broadband service," he added.

The technology uses dedicated copper lines to ensure customers receive "consistently good, stable speeds", which it claims cannot be achieved by mobile or satellite technologies in not-spot areas.

Last month, BT announced plans to double the number of Wi-Fi hotspots it operates in the UK to one million, meaning users could benefit from better use of VoIP solutions.
