Web-based services are not something that only younger people can have access to and there are a number of reasons why older people can be motivated to getting online, an expert has argued.

Information manager at Digital Unite Gill Adams said that while older generations have not been forced to use the internet through work or school, there are still reasons why they can and should become computer-literate.

Indeed, the availability of cheaper products and a range of special deals can be a motivator to encourage older people to use the web, she said.

"The thought that younger people can get all these things cheaper and they can't could be quite a big motivator," Ms Adams said.

One such service that may appeal is VoIP, where cheaper communications and phone calls can be made.

Ms Adams's comments follow research from Help the Aged and Age Concern which showed that pensioners are missing out on hundreds of pounds of savings as a result of not being able to access the internet.
